There are many variants of the BRCA gene and not all variant have the same level of risk. The classification of the gene has been changed from high risk to uncertain.
"Many women had mastectomies due to the initial report that the gene BRCA 1 placed women at a high risk of beast cancer and ovarian cancer. The risk was placed as high as 80% for a women with the gene to develop cancer within her life time.
