Karotyping Lab

We will practice doing a Pedigree Worksheet to determine the genotype of each member in the family.

You will work in groups of two for the Karyotyping  and then answer the questions.  Due on Monday, February 3, 2020

Coronaviruses: From Animals to Humans

We will discuss the corona virus.  Coronaviruses can jump directly from humans without mutating or passing through intermediate species.
It is believed the new strain of the corona virus started Huanan food market that supply food to Wuhan, China  The market sells carcasses and live specimen of wild animals such as bamboo rats, ostriches, baby crocodiles and hedgehogs. The animals are enjoyed as culinary delicacies and as traditional medicine. The precise origin of the current outbreak is not known.  the SARS, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, that started in 2002 originated in bats and spread to human via palm civets, a cat-sized  mammal, sold in Chinese food markets.

Additional Information will be discuss including what is being done to curb the outbreak.

The discussion will continue as more information is obtained and during the chapters on viruses later in the year.

Meiosis Rediuces the Chromosome Number from Diploid to Haploid

In Human the chromosome number is 46 ( 2N) The diploid number
Human gametes have 23 chromosomes (n) The haploid number.

This illustration outlines the stages of meiosis. In interphase, before meiosis begins, the chromosomes are duplicated. Meiosis I then proceeds through several stages. In prophase I, the chromosomes begin to condense and the nuclear envelope fragments. Homologous pairs of chromosomes line up, and chiasmata form between them. Crossing over occurs at the chiasmata. Spindle fibers emerge from the centrosomes. In prometaphase I, homologous chromosomes attach to the spindle microtubules. In metaphase I, homologous chromosomes line up at the metaphase plate. In anaphase I, the spindle microtubules pull the homologous pairs of chromosomes apart. In telophase I and cytokinesis, the sister chromatids arrive at the poles of the cell and begin to decondense. The nuclear envelope begins to form again, and cell division occurs. Meiosis II then proceeds through several stages. In prophase II, the sister chromatids condense and the nuclear envelope fragments. A new spindle begins to form. In prometaphase II, the sister chromatids become attached to the kinetochore. In metaphase II, the sister chromatids line up at the metaphase plate. In anaphase II, the sister chromatids are pulled apart by the shortening spindles. In telophase II and cytokinesis, the nuclear envelope forms again and cell division occurs, resulting in four haploid daughter cells.

Henrietta Lacks- HeLa Cells

Click on the link to read about cancer cells that have been multiplying in culture since 1951. The cells came from the body of Henrietta Lacks. HeLa cells as they are known have become the most widely used human cell line in biological research

The Cellular Basis of Reproduction an dInheritance.

Introduction to Genetics.  The information shared in class will start laying the foundation in order for you to grasp the unit.

I will elaborate on some of the words already introduced at the end of the sex ed unit and introduce some new ones necessary for you to fully understand the topic.

This unit more than others will require that you think critically to be able to work independently on the worksheets that will be given.

Most students enjoy the chapters on Genetics.

The Cellular Basis of Reproduction and Genetics.

Introduction to the unit on Genetics.

The class will read the original conclusion about the BRCA gene from the 2002 edition of the textbook and then compare it to the updated information about the gene.

Both articles discussed yesterday will be posted in Google Classroom for those interested in reading them.

Sex Education Packet is Due

Sex Education Packet will be graded.

If you were absent for the class make certain to collect the information handed out in class.

Science in the News

In addition, I will share information on "What to Know if You Resolve to Cut Out Meat- The Nutritional Gaps from not eating meat.  Veganuary the campaign encouraging people to give up meat for the month of January.  Veganuary launched in the UK by supermarkets and restaurants providing vegan products.

Also sharing information that the BRCA gene that lead women to believe they are at high risk for breast cancer might not be at risk at all.  There are many variants of the BRCA gene and not all variant have the same level of risk. The classification of the gene has been changed from high risk to uncertain.

"Many women had mastectomies due to the initial report that the gene BRCA 1 placed women at a high risk of beast cancer and ovarian cancer.  The risk was placed as high as 80% for a women with the gene to develop cancer within her life time.
