The first deaths linked to the novel coronavirus in the U.S. happened last week, days earlier than previously known, as the death count rose and is expected to continue to climb.
The first-known deceased, a 54-year-old man and a woman in her 80s, both died last Thursday and both were residents of a nursing home in Kirkland, Wash., that has been at the heart of the nation’s worst outbreak of the disease, officials from Seattle and King County reported Tuesday.
  • Number of confirmed cases of infection outside mainland China passes 10,000
  • New cases in New York and Georgia brought the number of infected people in the U.S. to at least 100 Tuesday
  • Johns Hopkins University says coronavirus has infected 90,926 people globally since late 2019 and 53% of those patients recovered
  • Johns Hopkins says a total of 3,117 coronavirus patients around the world have died
Washington state and the Life Care Center nursing home in particular have emerged as an early center of the infection’s spread in the U.S., with all nine of the country’s deaths coming from the state. The majority of those were residents of the Kirkland nursing home.
The two deaths reported Tuesday by local health officials were among seven new cases of Covid-19, the respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus, bringing the state’s overall total to 27.
The spread of the infection there and new diagnoses in New York, North Carolina, Florida, Arizona and Georgia raised the number of U.S. confirmed cases to more than 100 Tuesday. The North Carolina case is a person from Wake County who traveled to Washington state and was exposed to the novel coronavirus at the Kirkland nursing home, officials there said.

Globally, the new coronavirus has infected 90,926 people since it was first identified in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019, but 53% of those patients have recovered, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. A total of 3,117 coronavirus patients have died.

In China, the virus killed a further 31 people Tuesday, bringing the death toll to 2,943. But the country reported just 125 new confirmed infections, the lowest number since nationwide daily updates began Jan. 21. Most of the latest fatalities were in Hubei province, where the epidemic originated.

The novel coronavirus is now spreading faster outside China than within, with the number of confirmed cases outside mainland China crossing 10,000 Tuesday, compared with some 80,300 inside the country, according to the World Health Organization. Eighty percent of the new cases reported Tuesday came from South Korea, Italy and Iran, the WHO said.

The Corona virus started from the central Chinese city of Wuhan at the Wildlife Market.  The SARS virus that started in 2002 originated in bats and spread to humans via palm civets, a cat sized animal that looks like a weasel and sold in the Wildlife food market.

SARS type corona viruses reside in bats but cannot easily transfer to other host mutating along the way especially in markets where species including human mingle. China is the hotspot for such outbreaks because it combines a large bat population with densely populated rural areas and a long tradition of eating wildlife especially in the southern provinces of Guangdong and Guangxi.

The first signs of the outbreak came on December 29, 2019 when four members from the market were admitted to the Wuhan hospital with pneumonia.
The market was closed on January 1, 2020 after the authorities were alerted by the hospital.
health officials took samples from the market and found evidence of the virus in 33 of the 585 samples.  The confirmation of the virus at the market came from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.  The virus was found not just in people's bodies but on the wildlife stall.

Some wild markets sell over 100 wild life species fresh or frozen such as ostrich, deer, baby crocodile, wolves, bamboo rats, and hedgehog.

The wild meat is enjoyed as culinary delicacies or used as traditional medicine.  Shortly after the outbreak there was a temporary ban on the trade of wildlife animal and the wildlife breeding centers were quarantined.

Dr. Li Wenliang sounded the alarm on the virus by sending message to fellow medics about the outbreak on December 30, 2019.  He noticed that the disease looked like SARS the corona virus epidemic from 2003.  He advised them to wear protective clothing Three days later, he was visited by police who told him to stop. He returned to work and caught the virus from patients. He was in the hospital for about three weeks.
Dr Wenliang was asked to sign a letter from the Public Security Bureau.  He was accused of making false statements that had disturbed social order. His activity was deemed as being illegal and if continued would would be brought to justice.
Public authorities later apologized to him.

Dr. Wenliang, became infected by treating a patient with glaucoma who he did not know have the current corona virus. He started coughing on January 10th. Several of his test came back negative after he started coughing.
On January 20th, the Chinese declared the outbreak an emergency.
On January 30th the nucleic acid test result came back positive for Dr. Wenliang.
Dr. Wenliang died on February 7, 2020.

The Rest of the World
The world reacted as China quarantined cities, the rest of the world cancelled travel to China and quarantined cruise ships out at sea, most notably The Diamond Princess Cruise Ship that was quarantined off the coast of Japan.

Vaccine: On February 25, 2020 it was reported that drug maker Moderna, in the U.S. rapidly developed a vaccine that was co-designed with NIAID, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. A batch of the vaccine has been sent for human testing.  If the trials start in April, it would have been three months from vaccine design to human testing.

Johnson and Johnson, Sanofi, and Inovio Pharmaceuticals Inc.  have started to develop Corona Virus Vaccines and human  studies  of them could start anywhere  from a few months to about a year.
The world watched and listened as people and companies lost monies and stock markets fall, the DOW falling 1191 points on February 27, 2020.

President  Trump on February 26, 2020: addresses the nation, stated that the risk to Americans of the coronavirus remains very low and places the Vice-President, Mike Pence in charge of the federal response report.

The Italian Outbreak: On February 23, 2020 quarantine is imposed on Milan, Italy as it has the incident outside of Asia.  More than 50,000 people were not allowed to leave their towns.  More than 150 people in Italy have tested positive with about 115 of them in Lombardy.  Health officials were unable to explain how in a few days, Italy went from have three cases, two of them Chinese tourist, to having the biggest outbreak in Europe.
Soccer matches and other social events have been cancelled and schools will be closed for a week.

What Now: As can be seen from the above article countries across Europe have cases of the virus.  Germany has 27, France has 18, Spain has 13.  It is obvious how quickly the virus can spread. Italy went from having three confirmed cases to 453 in a few days.

Countries across Europe cannot effectively quarantine countries. The European nations have instituted checks and are cancelling events.

Bulgaria, a country in the southeastern  Europe  has cancelled travel to Milan until March 27th.
No country is mentioning banning travel to Europe.

The Chinese Diplomats: Over the past months they claimed that epidemic was a test of friendship and called for foreign governments not to suspend travel links, or to evacuate their citizens. It was thought to be an unfriendly, fear inducing, and unnecessary.

The epidemic in China seems to be slowing but now spreading to other regions. China is now having stricter health screening for travelers entering particularly from South Korea and Japan.  There are health screening and temperature checks at airports and other immigration check points for people arriving in China.  Some passengers, 257, arriving from in China from South Korea on Tuesday, February 25th, have been quarantined.

California: The most recent case in California, announced on February 27th may not be linked to travel.  The person has been identified as being from Solano County, approximately 34 miles south of Sacramento, CA.

Sources: The information came for the Wall Street Journal, The BBC, and searching the Internet for information.
