Chapter 11: The Control of Gene Expression

Tuesday, March 19, 2019

We will start chapter 11 by examining some of the ways that the genetic technology is being use.
We will discuss one component of tobacco smoke; BPDE, that binds to the p53 tumor suppressor gene and deactivates it.

We will also discuss mammals that have been cloned.  So far, at least 23 mammals have been cloned.

China Breaks a Cloning Barrier: Primates

The development heralds the possibility of genetically engineered primates for drug testing, gene editing and brain research.

The article featured the cloning of Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua, the first monkey clones at the Chinese Academy of Science in Shanhai.

Transcription and Translation

You will work on your own to transcribe the mRNA from a given DNA strand and then translate it into the protein.
In addition, you will identify  base substitution  and deletion mutations, and state whether or not the mutations are silent or not,

Transcription and Translation of the DNA

The following topic will be covered:
1) Copying the DNA following the base-pairing rule
2) Transcription of the mRNA on a DNA template
3) Translation, translating the mRNA into amino acids using the genetic code chart.
